Do We Need Heritage Months?
As this is the first post in February, I feel like I should address the topic of "heritage/celebration months". When you think of the 12 months of the year you may think of the different seasons, or the holidays associated with each month. However, in the 2020's we associate the different months with groups of various marginalized groups that are designated a specific month for their heritage and history to be celebrated. Now, you might think that I have an issue with this, and I do, but not for the reasons that you would think.
After doing some internet research, I discovered that there is an entire calendar of history/heritage months, so I am going to do my best to break each month down, so you have an idea of who you are going to be celebrating each month.
February: Black History Month
March: Women's History Month, Irish American Heritage Month, Greek American Heritage Month
April: Arab American Heritage Month
May: Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Jewish American Heritage Month
June: Pride Month, Caribbean American Heritage Month, Immigrant Heritage Month
July: Disability Month, French American Heritage Month,
August: Transgender History Month
September: Hispanic Heritage Month
October: German American Heritage Month, Filipino American History Month, Italian American Heritage Month
November: Native American Heritage Month
Now, you are likely going to want to say "There is nothing wrong with different groups being celebrated during the calendar year" and you are right, but in my personal opinion, the more we try to take groups of people and celebrate the fact that they belong to a certain race, ethnic group, gender or whatever else, then we further divide an already divided country.
America already has a problem with division between different social groups so to designate thirty-one days on the calendar to celebrate a group just for being themselves seems self-destructive. I believe the nation needs to focus on its history as a whole and stop trying to just look at it through the divisive lens that the left loves to show history through.
